The 2011 Walk Results

Another opportunity to THANK each and every person that contributed to another successful Greater Lex. CROP Hunger Walk!! Although we did not reach our $25,000 goal, other inspirational moments blessed approx. 300+ participants that warm, sunny Sunday afternoon.

The 'new' Walk route through one of our city's impoverished areas serviced by God's Pantry definitely was experiential for many of the Walkers. I visited with some of the residents a couple weeks prior to our Walk, not only to deliver 'Ending Hunger One Step at a Time' posters, but to invite them to join us. It was heartwarming to witness many neighbors greet us from their porches, small front yards, or standing on the sidewalk or street. Communal indeed when a few of our sisters and brothers walked with us!

The responsive CROP Hunger Walk Litany participants read just before Walking reminded us of our mission ...... "may you be mindful for all those who have no choice but to walk for food, for water, for firewood, for safety" (From Bread of Tomorrow: Praying with the World's Poor)

TO date, we have raised $21,748!! ..... $160.00 more than last year. BUT!! I'm personally hopeful that our Walk will receive on-line THANKSGIVING and CHRISTMAS gifts. I've requested this from my family, how about each one of you??

AMAZING NEWS!! 25% of the total amount was raised by just ONE, truly dedicated church---Woodland Christian! Many Thanks to David Lee, lead recruiter!! Congrats also to Beaumont Presbyterian, Crestwood Christian, Newman Center/Holy Spirit, Providence Christian-Nicholasville and First Christian Church-Winchester for exceeding their last year's total.

Kudos also to Stacey Stone, Unitarian Universalist Church, for successfully coordinating the experiential educational stations presented by God's Pantry, Woodland Christian, 1st Christian (Winchester), 2nd Presbyterian, and two stations from UUC.

It was also meaningful to see more Walkers this year carry creative signs depicting hunger, poverty, fair trade, clean water issues.

Do know that I will contact each one of you again early next summer :) In the meantime continue to support Church World Service and God's Pantry and begin recruiting other churches and organizations in your communities and neighborhoods to join us next year. I will gladly follow-up once you 'tag' them :)

Called to Walk - 2011

We are called to Walk in solidarity with ALL our brothers and sisters suffering with hunger and poverty....and YES, WE HEAR!

Once again, my team and I send this open invitation to all concerned citizens to WALK with your neighbors on SUNDAY, SEPT. 25th.
We will gather at Second Presbyterian Church (corner E. Main/Ransom Sts.) at 3:00 PM to register (no fee). The 3 mile EXPERIENTIAL Walk includes the historic East End, Constitution, MLK and E. Maxwell districts starts at 3:30PM.

"Ending Hunger One Step at a Time" T-shirts will sold for $10.00. The profits also benefit God's Pantry and Church World Service.

We will share a responsive CROP (Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty) litany just before we walk together. Bring a can of food for God's Pantry, a water bottle to be refilled at the half-way point water station, and BRING at least one FRIEND! More info. listed in my Aug. blog entry below :)

Copies of the Walk route will be available upon your arrival. I do ask that everyone CROSS AT THE MARKED INTERSECTIONS. NO JAYWALKING. Volunteer crossing guards will be located at the busy intersections to assist with your safe crossing. I will also ask Metro Police to assist at the E. Main/Vine St. crossing. You will also see them 'drive-by.'

NO roller skates, bicycles, scooters, skate boards will be allowed. Of course, wagons, strollers and wheelchairs are OK :)

I am looking forward to meeting and Walking (rain or shine:) with all of you SUN. 25th.

23rd Annual Walk - Plans for Sept. 25, 2011

The 23rd annual Greater Lexington CROP (Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty) Hunger Walk launched the 2011 mission with a very successful Recruiter's Rally August 16th. To date, we have 24 area interfaith churches committed and we are hopeful that 6 more will 'come on board' within the next 2 weeks, to help with "Ending Hunger One Step at a Time."

Registration will begin 3:00 PM, SUNDAY, SEPT. 25th at 2nd Presbyterian Church and the 3 mile experiential Walk (once again, this year 2nd's bus will drive the route for those physically unable to walk) will commence at 3:30 PM.

New and repeat 'happenings' this year are:

1. Revised 3 mile route includes the East End area of Lex.


2. All Walkers are asked to bring one can of non-perishable food for God's Pantry. Protein items are needed, eg. peanut butter, tuna, chicken, etc. 25% all funds raised are donated to God's Pantry. 75% to Church World Service to help eradicate worldwide hunger and poverty and to promote peace and justice. Our final 2010 donation was $21,594....the best ever!! Please read more about CWS at www.churchworldservice.org. The Walk is just one of their many programs.


3. We are 'GREENING' the walk this year by refilling personal water containers from gallon jugs at the water stop. PLEASE bring your own bottle.


4. A designated area in the parking lot will be available for group pictures.


5. T-shirts will be available for $10.00 and $12.00 Walk Day.


6. There will be a responsive CROP Hunger Walk Litany before we take the 'First Step.'

Our local mission is to bring ALL people together around the common concern that hunger and poverty are MORAL ISSUES. For us material abundance and safety come with the responsibility toward those who are the most vulnerable. It is alarming to read the staggering stats re: worldwide and LOCAL hunger issues!! ....and it was a VERY GOOD 2010 Year!

Let us rejoice and give Thanks for our very successful 2010 CROP Hunger Walk. Truly the most productive in this community's history! 27 Geater Lex. churches and the EKU Student Dietetic Assoc. raised $20,894!

We were delighted to have five new churches join us this year, Providence Christian-Nicholasville, First Christian and Oxford Christian-Georgetown, Wilmore Presbyterian, and North Middletown Christian and look forward to their presence in 2011. Approx. 270 Walkers shared their enthusiastic spirit of compassion during our 'new' 3 mile experiential walk route. Other 'firsts' this year were the 'bus-walkers' .... thanks Lakshman for volunteering to drive ... and inspiring bagpipe music to 'lead us off and bring us home' from Ross and David. Many Thanks to our talented musicians!

Kudos to our creative, resourceful youth, adults and pastors from Providence Christian, Woodland Christian, Unitarian Universalist, First Church of Christ Scientist, and Holy Spirit Parish (Newman Center) for their reflective educational stations that reminded us of the work that needs to be done for God's Kingdom here on earth and how we can be part of the solution. We were pleased that staff members from God's Pantry also greeted us. Our meditative prayers included counting our blessings and giving thanks for another glorious, sunny day to Help End Hunger One Step at a Time.

Once again, I sincerely appreciate each one of you for your dedication and service! Many Thanks to my loyal committee, hardworking recruiters, energetic volunteers, willing participants and generous donors for making this mission a gratifying success. I will be in touch with all of you next July as we plan for the mid-Aug. Recruiter's Rally. The 2011 Walk will be SUN. SEPT. 25th. Mark your church calendars now :)

It's Walk Time!

Our community's "Ending Hunger One Step at a Time" Walk is just around the corner! Many dedicated recruiters have spent the past few weeks inspiring and energizing their congregations to participate in the Greater Lex. CROP Hunger Walk. Their spirit of service has not only motivated church members but also their families, friends, co-workers, neighbors to Walk as a witness to fight hunger and poverty and to raise funds for our local God's Pantry and Church World Service.

GOOD NEWS! We already have $2,090 donations on www.cropwalkonline.org! It is very hopeful that we can reach, or maybe even surpass our $22,000 goal since our fundraising will continue for another month!

A few reminders re: Walk Day:

• Registration begins at 3PM on Sunday, Sept. 26 in back parking lot of 2nd Presbyterian.
• One can park in the Goodwin Sq. parking lot across the street.
• Bring your yellow registration sheet from the donation envelope.
• Some have already registered on line.
• EVERYONE needs to register and forms will be available when you sign-in.
• T SHIRTS can be purchased for $12.00.
• A donated gift basket of organic skin products from Insignia Salon will be 'raffled-off.'
• The 3 mile experiential Walk will begin at 3:30PM with an unique send-off.
• Please bring your own water but we will have a water stop at Newman Center on Rose St.
• NO bicyles, skates, skateboards, etc. will be allowed due to safety issues.
• Wagons, strollers, wheelchairs are definitely OK.
• Crossing guard volunteers will be at the busier intersections around campus.
• PLEASE do not jaywalk.

We want everyone else to know why we are walking! Please remember to bring a sign to carry (create your own:), wear your CROP Hunger Shirt, group youth shirts, carry your church banner, etc.

The stations are at 1st Church of Christ Scientist, Park United Methodist, Woodland Christian, Newman Center, Singletary Center, and Calvary Baptist.

Preparation for the 2010 Walk begins

The annual Greater Lexington CROP (Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty) Hunger Walk will be SUNDAY, SEPT. 26th. We will gather at 3:00 PM at Second Presbyterian Church with a 'new' 3 mile Walk route beginning at 3:20. We have an unique 'send-off' planned :) Everyone will definitely hear THE call to begin
      'Ending Hunger One Step at a Time'
... the theme for this year's Walk.

Just a few examples of how the steps we take in the CROP Hunger Walk lead to real, lasting change: 25% of the funds we collect are given to GOD'S PANTRY. The 2009 grant of $4,131 will help support their many food banks in central and eastern Ky.

The CROP Hunger Walk is a fundraiser for Church World Service. At least 50 local congregations are members of CWS so we have the potential to significantly expand this mission to further impact the lives of those in need locally and around the world. This year we would love to have more community service groups, school organizations, business associations to join us.

This past year the gifts we donated to CWS assisted with providing immediate emergency needs after the severe flooding in the Southeast and after the devastating earthquake in Indonesia. They were among the very first responders to care for our sisters and brothers when Katrina ravaged the Gulf a few years ago. Visit www.churchworldservice.org for more info about their ministries.

The Recruiter's Rally where everyone will receive all needed materials and share tips for inspiring Walkers and Donors will be THURSDAY, AUGUST 12, 7:00-8:30 PM at Second Presbyterian Church, E. Main St., Lexington.

My committee and I are working diligently to make this year's Walk the BEST YET! With all of us putting our faith in action, we can make it happen! We do make a difference in the lives of so many people!

Final 2009 Report

The Greater Lexington CROP Hunger Walk was nearly 4 months ago but eternally optimistic me decided to wait a 'little longer' to enter the final 2009 BLOG with hopes that more donations would be forthcoming and they did! Once again, my team and I are grateful to all the loyal, diligent, motivated recruiters for their successful efforts and outcomes for our 2009 Walk.

We are a little disappointed that our $25,000 goal was not attained but we will once again aim for that goal this year. Many other KY-IN Walks also attribute their lower than usual donations to the recession. Seven churches raised approx. 70% of our total contributions -- $16,519. (Last year, $19,022.) Nearly 375 walkers representing 24 churches, student groups and 'walk-ons' appreciated the warm, sunny afternoon to walk together to take a stand against local and global hunger.

Our 'new' friends this past year were Woodland Christian Church, Lex., Midway Presbyterian Church and an EKU student group. Special recognition to 1st Christian Church, Winchester for increasing their total contributions this year by nearly 230% ! from 2008, Meadowthorpe Presbyterian, Lex. - 106% increase and Chapel Hill Presbyterian, Lex. - 104%. THANK YOU!

Abundant Thanks to my dedicated team, Alice, Suzi, Beth and Ron and all volunteers! Cheers to our creative youth and adults from Crestwood Christian, Unitarian Universalist, Central Christian, 1st Presbyterian and 2nd Presbyterian churches for their interesting educational stations that focused on local/global hunger, poverty, clean water and environmental concerns. My Thanks to our photographers Sonny and Dwight and to Dwight, our BLOG moderator. It is my joy and honor to work with all of you :)

It was fun to share the excitement with many of you when we read the wonderful piece about our Walk in the Lex. Herald Leader the following morning ... pictures too! Hopefully, this will encourage more groups to join us this year. I will let all recruiters know when the April organizational meeting with Rev. Judy Dunson, regional director from Indianapolis, will be held here in Lex, hopefully at 2nd Presbyterian. She will help guide us with developing and implementing 'new' ways to further promote participation in our CROP Hunger Walk. PLEASE consider attending and sharing your ideas. We NEED your help! In the 'works' now is a new route for this year; 'south to UK area' and hopefully more youth stations :)

As faithful servants, may we all continue to support the mission and ministry of CWS (Church World Service) and God's Pantry thru out the year. We are well aware that the needs of our sisters and brothers have drastically increased the past year and especially now with the horrific earthquake in Haiti !!

Off to a great beginning for Sunday's Walk

Only a few days to go until the Greater Lex. CROP Hunger Walk ... Sunday, Sept. 27th, 3 pm at 2nd Presbyterian Church.

I know my team and many recruiters representing 27 churches are involved with educational programs to increase awareness regarding hunger and poverty issues, presenting Moment for Mission during worship services, writing articles for newsletters, recruiting walkers to raise funds, etc.

To date, a week before the Walk, we have received $1,170 on line. We are off to a great beginning! Our goal this year is $25,000 with at least 400 people walking together to take a stand against hunger in our communities here and around the world.

I encourage everyone to visit our on-line site at http://www.cropwalkonline.org/. The Greater Lex. site is set-up and is very easy to navigate. It is fun to set up your own team and e-mail your long distance family and friends to support your efforts with this mission.

Plans made for the 2009 Walk on Sept. 27

The 2009 Greater Lexington CROP Hunger Walk officially began our mission in August with the annual Recruiter's Rally.

Already, 27 area churches and God's Pantry have joined together to implement our most successful Walk yet. We are determined to exceed last year's goals!

Our faith in action is challenged during this worldwide economic crises which calls us to a new level of committment. For it is possible to truly have enough for all if we reach out and share the burden of those in need. Hunger and poverty ARE moral issues. For us, material abundance and safety come with responsibility toward those who have little or nothing.

Therefore our goal this year is 425+ Walkers raising $25,000 :) God's Pantry receives 25% of which they can distribute $10 worth food for every 1 dollar donation. Church World Service receives 75% for global hunger needs and other international relief programs.

Registration, NO fee, begins 3 pm SUNDAY, SEPT. 27 at Second Presbyterian Church, E. Main St. in Lexington. The interfaith, experiential 2.4 mile Walk downtown begins 3:20 pm. EVERYONE is welcomed! CROP Hunger Walk tee shirts will be available for sale -- 15$.

2008 Hunger Walk Report

Dear Friends,

As I reflect on my many blessings this Thanksgiving, once again,
I Give Thanks to each one of you that participated in another successful CROP Hunger Walk.

We estimate about 260 people - and a few 'walkers at large' - representing 25 diverse congregations in the Greater Lexington area walked together Sept. 28, 2008, to take a stand against hunger and poverty in our communities and the world. As of Dec. 1, we have raised $18,196 :) .... last year, $17,545.

We were delighted to witness more local pastors Walking with their members, 4 'new' churches that joined this year -Versailles Presbyterian, Crestwood Christian, Meadowthorpe Presbyterian and Lexington Friends Meeting, a significant increase in friends and families donating on-line (this option still available :), and another warm, sunny day to promote our mission!

Abundant THANKS to my dedicated team, Alice, Suzi, Beth, Ron and Bobbie and to each one of the Recruiters for your willingness to invest time and energy to promote the Walk.

Special recognition to the Youth and their leaders :) from Chapel Hill Pres., Unitarian Universalist and Beaumont Pres. for their creative, educational 'station' presentations! Personal Thanks to Dwight, our BLOG moderator, Sonny, our talented photographer, and ALL the volunteers that assisted Walk Day. It is my honor to 'work' with all of you!

Come Walk With Us

Just 2 weeks until the Greater Lexington CROP Hunger Walk! Sunday, Sept 28th, 3 PM at Second Presbyterian Church, East Main at Ransom.

We will gather in the parking area directly behind the church. Parking is available at Goodwin Sq. Center off Ransom. We are the only Central Kentucky experiential CROP Hunger Walk.

Due to the current abysmal economic situation, I am confident that most people are aware of the increasing hunger needs of our fellow human beings, locally and globally. Therefore, my team and I have been working diligently with promoting this mission, increasing participation, educating our communities, and encouraging those of us that have never been truly hungry or lived in poverty, to reach a little deeper in our pockets to support our local God's Pantry and Church World Service.

One can also Walk On-Line: very easy access, 3 step directions, and secure at http://www.cropwalkonline.org/

Everyone is invited to Walk. You may 'just show up' at 3 PM on 9-28 and register at that time. To save plastic, please bring your own water 'bottle' ---- water will be available at the midway point of the 2.4 mile downtown Walk (see the map below). A few extra CROP HUNGER signs will be available for those 'last minute' walkers.

We are optimistic that our 20th Walk will be the most productive yet! The ONE organization will be represented on 9-28 and CROP Hunger Walk T-shirts will be available to purchase for 15 dollars.

Rally Prepares for the Sept. 28, 2008 Walk

The 20^th Greater Lexington CROP Hunger Walk is 'off' to a great start! Our productive Orientation Recruiter's Rally was held on August 14. Members from churches in Versailles, Winchester and Lexington attended.

35 area churches, representing the diverse interfaith community of Catholic, Friends Meeting, Unitarian Universalist, Episcopal, Christian, Methodist, Baptist, Lutheran, Missonary Baptist and Presbyterian, have committed to further expanding our efforts with fighting hunger and poverty, around the corner and around the world, by reaching beyond our church walls.

Our mission is to educate our families, friends, neighors, co-workers, social groups and to raise funds to assist our local God's Pantry and Church World Service in providing resources for those in need.

The 2008 Walk starts at 3 PM on Sunday, September 28^th, at Second Presbyterian Church. We invite all people concerned with the moral issues of hunger and poverty to join us. We DO make a difference!

Walk to Help Fight Hunger

The Greater Lexington CROP Hunger Walk invites people of all ages and faiths to join in providing resources to fight hunger around the world and around the corner. Funds raised through the CROP Walk help people in more than 80 countries through self-help development, disaster response, and refugee services.

In 2007, $ 17,545.00 was raised by the Greater Lexington CROP Hunger Walk with approximatley 400 walkers coming from 30 groups. A Church World Service grant equivalent to 25% of the funds raised by the CROP Walk was received by God's Pantry Food Bank. Through a special donor-designated option, the World Relief Commission of the NAE also benefited from the Walk.

Mary Alice Pratt: our Walker Extraordinaire

Mary Alice Pratt received a regional CROP Walker Extraordinaire Award at a dinner gathering with her Newman Center (Holy Spirit Catholic Church) Social Justice/Peace Ministry Committee on January 25, 2008. Her nomination was accepted by regional CWS board last month. Greater Lexington CROP Walk Coordinator Judy Ellis presented Mary Alice with a certificate and 2 recognition gifts on behalf of Rev. J. Dunson, Regional Director of CWS.

Mary Alice was recognized as an energetic, faithful supporter of the CROP Walk program for past 8-10 yrs. Not only is she an effective recruiter for donations and walkers BUT she walks the entire route (3 miles this year) and many of the 'much younger' participants joyfully announce that they have a hard time 'keeping up with Mary Alice." She is always enthusiastic when called when it's CROP time! Never an excuse that she is too busy! She is adored, loved and admiredby so many within her church and community.

Mary Alice is an exemplary, faithful servant for all of us. She is also ardently devoted to other social justice/peace/poverty ministries within Ky, including recently being elected to BUILD's (Building United Interfaith Lexington thru Direct-Action) Executive Committee.

AND...Lex. CROP Walk received a $ 500 donation just last month.   :)   Now, we total $ 17,300 !

Final Report of the 2007 Hunger Walk

The Greater Lexington 2007 CROP Hunger Walk donations total $16,800.

The TEAM's goal of $20,000 will, once again, be our mission for 2008. Most importantly, we are pleased with the number of 'new' churches that joined this year. Therefore, more faithful servants to work towards abating the hunger needs not only in our communities but around the world.

Many Thanks to all participants, lead recruiters, volunteers, and the CROP Walk team for another successful WALK. You are appreciated for all that you do for our brothers and sisters in need.

400 Walk on a Glorious Day

We had a glorious day! The weather was perfect -- approximately 400 walkers. We sold 32 T-shirts (which netted a $160 profit for CROP) -- 30 churches were represented!

We had 9 'new' ones this year ... including Rev. Cain and 20 others from Unitarian Universalist church, Arlington Christian (Rev. Kris Bentley), Victory Christian, South Elkhorn Christian, Crossroads Christian, Antioch Missionary Baptist, Centenary Methodist, 1st Christian ( Frankfort), Pisgah Presbyterian ... and a few people that just 'walked up' Sunday afternoon who had heard about the Walk via God's Pantry or the newspaper.

To date, pledges and cash: nearly 11,000$$. We estimate that this is probably about 60 % of the total we expect to eventually receive. WOW, we are really pleased! Contributions are being accepted for another month. You may contribute on-line here.

Also, walkers loved the new route, lots of compliments and youth 'stations' were meaningful. Our best walk yet!! More diversity represented also!

Next year's walk is set for the last Sunday in September (9/28/2008).

La Roca Methodist, Lexington Friends Meeting, Maxwell St. Presbyterian, New Vine Baptist, Newman Center, Pisgah Presbyterian, South Elkhorn Christian, St Paul Catholic, St Paul AME, St Peter Catholic, St Peter Claver Catholic, St Rapheal Episcopal, Unitarian Universalist, Walnut Hill Community, Faith Baptist (Georgetown), 1st Christian (Winchester), and 1st Christian (Frankfort). Also folks from God's Pantry, Lexington Catholic H.S. Kentucky Baptist Seminary, Univ. of Kentucky Campus Ministries, and Transylvania Univ. Campus Ministries are expected.

The weather prediction is "Mostly Sunny, 69 degrees." Come join the crowd!
